In all honesty, what you read/see on this blog is just a snapshot of what I am doing and eating. I splurge...sometimes, too much for my own good.
*Note: just because the cinnamon gummy hearts were only $1.25, doesn't mean I had to eat them in 1.25 days.
I struggle daily with the negative self-talk, comparisons, and body image like many out there.
Too often, I assume the all-or-nothing approach, where one "bad" food scratches my whole day. I'm working on loving myself more; check out a great post that Lindsay wrote on celebrating yourself.

But seriously. Damn you Pinterest for making me desire a sculpted physique while noshing on double stuffed, caramel-chocolate cookies covered with sprinkles and fairy dust.

No need to cue any more cravings than I already have. So, if I'm hungry, I avoid Pinterest.
Ultimately, I try to bring inspiration to this blog in the form of healthy living, but I'm not there 100% of the time. Just ask Coach who has to pry the spoon away from me near an open peanut butter jar.
**Note: my fellow FitFluential buddy Jess just offered this tip on PB snacking: buy the PB2 powder, and you can't grab a spoon and snack straight from the jar. Brilliant!

At my full-time job (sedentary desk life), I typically feel the snack attack at 3 p.m. Usually, I have a few of my peanut butter protein bars on hand to ward off the hungries, but still feel guilty for snacking --which is ridiculous!
However, after reading an article in Oxygen magazine, I was reminded that multiple, small meals throughout the day would serve me better. That way I would avoid the blood sugar crash after a larger meal.
Do you do this?
What are your go-to afternoon snacks to ward off hunger?
*WINNERS*

I literally see nothing wrong with snacking on pb straight from the jar. So long as it's all natural, it's all good fats and calories. That's better than eating the same amount in cookies :)
ReplyDeletelady, you are strong and beautiful and eating gummies are part of life, it can't be forgotten! hehe. I think pb2 is perfect for snack, or regular right out the jar. You are active and our bodies crave that nourishment, inside and out. GREAT POST!
ReplyDeleteSnacking is a must.
ReplyDeleteSnacks always depend on what I purchased on my shopping trips nut rice cakes, corn thins, fruit, coconut milk yogurt, pb&j sandwich.....nothing is off limits but I drink water first and gauge my hunger queues first.
Ask ?s like: ami truly hungry or did something emotional just happen.
If I anseer I'm hungry then I eat regardless if I ate 20 minutes or 6 hours earlier.
I feel no guilt for planned and/or healthy snacking. Everyday I take a pile of healthy food with my to work and tend to just munch all day. I'm prepared for it, and since I'm a grazer, I have healthy food at the ready. Every sunday I buy a bag of baby carrots to keep at my desk for when I feel like I just need to munch on something. It works out pretty well - If I'm actually hungry, the carrots take care of it. If I hate the carrots, then it's a sign that I'm just bored and I move along.
ReplyDeleteThe guilt comes from the uncontrollable inhalation of cookies or whatever ends up in the kitchen at the office.
I like snacking and usually plan for 2 snacks a day. Sometimes more depending on when I workout. For the most part I always have a Lara Bar and some mixed nuts/dried fruit in my bag. I find those items can help my curb both my salty or sweet cravings.
ReplyDeleteI graze through the day when I'm home and really try to carry good, nutritious food with me when I'm going to be out of the house. That's not to say that I never eat 10 chocolate chip cookies in a day...ooops. But they were gluten-free...so that negates the massive amounts of sugar, right? LOL Don't answer that.
ReplyDeleteMy go-to snack foods really depend on the day and what is on hand. Sometimes it's a handful of almonds and a couple of dates, others it's a few slices of turkey and a piece of goat cheese...or I might grab a banana.
I really want to try PB2! I keep hearing about it and seeing it on other blogs. And I just looked at your protein cake from yesterday and omg that looks so delicious :). I will have to try it! I am a big snacker. I have 2-3 snacks everyday. Otherwise I get way to hungry between meals and feel lightheaded.
ReplyDeletemust check out the protein cake recipe.
ReplyDeletei could eat all day long...really!!
:)
I really want a pumpkin smoothie.
ReplyDeleteI definitely snack throughout the day. Sometimes I just break up my lunch into pieces. So I'll have a banana or yogurt mid morning, eat the main part of my lunch closer to 12-1 (like dinner leftovers), then a piece of fruit and something with protein mid afternoon to last me until dinner. And I'm with Kari- I do the PB straight from a jar thing from time to time. I keep a jar of PB at work with me for eating on its own, or with Apple or Celery I bring from home. It's a better option than the baked goods that get brought in to work!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link love! You SHOULD love yourself more! We all should!
ReplyDelete(I have a thing for those cinnamon hearts too!)
I snack on regular pb/almond butter from the jar and then feel bad about my life after... haha? I need to get my hands on some PB2.. i have only heard good things!
ReplyDeleteI definitely pick PB from the jar as an afternoon snack too! Also popcorn and veggies dipped in greek yogurt!
ReplyDeleteI totally know where you're coming from with the all or nothing. If you eat one thing considered "bad" you feel awful - it's tough to get out of that mindset!! Argh!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE your blog, it's positive, it's inspiring and it's REAL.
:) thanks again for mentioning me! Glad it was a tip that stuck:)
I fell guilty all the time. I am working on it too but it is SO HARD. I just want to go out and eat pizza without feeling terrible about myself. Or maybe french fries. Or chips. But every time I eat these things I feel gross. In time I will learn that the occasional indulgence will not make me gain 10 pounds!
ReplyDeleteI snack all the time. Usually protein bars, egg whites, fruits, or veggies make the cut ;)
OMH I have never seen PB2. I must be living under a rock. I am so ordering some ASAP!!!! My go to afternoon snacks are Larabars or boiled eggs! :)
ReplyDeleteMmm cinnamon gummy hearts!!! Yummo.
ReplyDeleteI am a total afternoon snacker. To keep that under control I try to keep almonds in my desk drawer or boiled egg whites in the fridge. So very not exciting but it works.
I am definitely a snacker, too! Sometimes healthy, sometimes less so... but the less so is always dark chocolate, which I'm giving up for Lent. We'll see how that goes. Otherwise, I usually grab an apple and nuts. It's so true that snacking can be a good way to go, keeps your metabolism running all day!
ReplyDeleteHave you heard of Coconut Palm Sugar? I saw it on Dr. Oz today and it has a very low glycemic index level and therefore doesn't burst your blood sugar so if you substitute this for white or brown sugar in your little treats, it supposedly doesn't give you the crash after and it's actually GOOD for you. He had some good afternoon snacks on there, too....like ricotta cheese sandwiched between a few apple slices and sprinkled with cinnamon (an endurance athletes gem!). I thought about you when I saw the show.
ReplyDeleteI agree that you should be eating 6 mini meals throughout the day. This will help ward off the cravings and afternoon crash. I'm not perfect with this either, but on the days that I'm true to my eating plan, I'm not hungry in the afternoons because I've been eating every 21/2 to 3 hours. Good luck....www.dashingdiva.net
ReplyDeleteI eat smaller meals all day. It kinda feels like I'm constantly eating but I like it. :-)
ReplyDeleteMy go to is usually yogurt, or cottage cheese. Maybe PB and something. It depends.
Ahh, Jess, I'm in the same boat as you and feel like I've been failing huge lately with the snacking and the all-or-nothing approach and totally mindless eating. I need to give my head a shake and get back on track because it makes me feel so much better. If only I could get rid of my sweet tooth and gain some will power........
ReplyDeleteI need some of those cinnamon jelly hearts! Yum!!
ReplyDeleteI love your blog and that you are very real and show that not everyday is perfect diet wise. It makes me feel a little less guilty too :)but I also love it to get ideas for healthy foods. I have made your protein bars and LOVE them!
ReplyDeleteThose gummies look yummy I would have eaten them in 1 day too haha.
AAck thank you so much, I am e-mailing you as we speak :)
ReplyDeleteI love your blog, your honesty is inspiring! And the same thing happens to me sometimes-- I'll eat a thing or two of junk and then I just feel like I've ruined it for the entire day....
I'm definitely no expert, but I try to eat my biggest meal at lunch, and my smallest meal at dinner. I also brush my teeth right after I eat dinner, because I have to pack lunches for the kids, & find that I snack like a crazy person if I don't have minty fresh teeth. At work, I usually leave all of my cash in the car. . . to avoid trips to the coffee stand or vending machines.
ReplyDeleteYes, you are beautiful and strong and an amazing athlete! :) Pin THAT! :) Oh and PB2 is AMAZING!!!! We have it daily over here! :) Hugs!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to your winners.
ReplyDeleteI do eat small meals all day long!
If one needs variation from their steam vegetables or fresh fruits for snack, try oatmeal cookies with milk or hot cocoa. They are great combination that will surely make you happy as cocoa are happy boosters.
ReplyDeleteI usually always crave something between 2:30 and 3:30. I try to get up and take a little walk around my office, drink some water or make some green tea. Lately I've been snacking on these:http://grabthegold.com/
ReplyDeleteI usually have a half of one in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. They keep me fueled until dinner time.
Afternoon snacks are KEY for me. If I don't eat one I always end up overeating at dinner. I try to eat smaller meals, with some snacks in between.
ReplyDeleteAlso you should never feel guilty about having a healthy snack! Snacks are definitely PART OF being healthy :)
I always snack at 3. I too have a VERY sedentary job, and it stinks. However, the belly says "eat," so I listen.
ReplyDeleteSee this is why I search the "fitness" tab on Pinterest on my Iphone app. I ONLY look at the quotes and workout ideas etc. and avoid the food!! I have been getting some SERIOUS motivation from Pinterest lately!
ReplyDeleteI try to eat every 2-3 hours and it works well in the morning. But I always feel tired after lunch. Maybe I should eat just a sandwich or salad for lunch and then some fruit in the afternoon. Work in progress :)
